Character Report

Kek comes from Africa. In Africa, he sees snow for the first time, and feels it's sting. He's never walked on ice and he falls. He wonders if the people in this new place will be like the winter, cold and unkind. In Africa, Kek lived with his mother, father and brother, but only he and his mother have survived. And now she is missing. Kek is on his own. Slowly, he makes friends: a girl who is in foster care, an old woman who owns a rundown farm, and a cow whose name means "family", in his native language. As Kek awaits word of his mother's fate, he weathers the tough Minnesota winter by finding warmth in his new friendships, strength in his memories and belief in his new country.

Home of the Brave
by: Katherine Applegate

Part 1.

1.) Reflect- it was brave of Kek to went to America and face his new world, met new people and to know new things.. Kek is really a brave boy and he holds a strong faith in his heart. He is just so lucky for he met good people along the way of his journey. Dave is a nice man for helping Kek to adjust, for guiding his path and especially for serving as his second father. His aunt and nephew were also helping him to face his new world, he lives now at them and they are the one who support him to survive.. They are one of a kind and a kind-hearted people.

2.) Question- I wonder why Kek is not with his mother when he went to america , weren't they're together when the incident happened? Maybe ,it would be easier for Kek to move on to what had happened to his brother and father if he is with his mother from the start, from the time he went to America. How did he know Dave in the camp? Are they related to each other? It's just so lucky of Kek to have Dave by his side all throughout his journey.

3.) Connect- It was just last year when my mom left to work abroad. I felt so sad for it was my first time to be far from her for a very long time. I can connect myself to Kek because like him I can say that i am now brave enough when it comes to being independent. I can connect also myself to this story because like Kek   I also love animals because my father used to have many since I was young.

4.) Predict- I think it will really be easier for Kek to move on if he is with his mother and also I think Kek can see his mother in the character of Lou. Maybe Kek is now good in managing life's challenges and  he is a good influence and inspiration to all of those teens out there who has a broken family.
